List of the five most ridiculous Golden Globe nominations

The Hollywood Foreign Press agency enjoys nominating films and performances for Golden Globes that are not necessarily worth recognition. We obtain it; they accredit A-listers that allows you to fortify the star power attending and, because of this, the all-important TV ratings. But that doesn’t mean the organisation should get off the hook for most with their more suspect selections. Here’s our set of the 5 most ridiculous Golden Globe nominations.

1. Angelina Jolie “The Tourist”

Golden Globe nominationsJust this past year this critically derided dud – which has been neither a musical nor a comedy – nabbed a nom, as did its two unworthy stars, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. In doing so, it stole a spot from a more deserving movie (such as “Please Give,” “Cyrus,” or “Manufactured in Dagenham”) and left everyone – from journalists to average Joes – crying foul. To further accentuate the HFPA’s flub, Angelina Jolie practically mocked her nomination, telling the Associated Press: “There we were laughing because it is the new that I have been inside comedic category, so its new in my opinion.”

2. Meryl Streep, “She-Devil”

Golden Globe nominationsMeryl Streep has more Golden Globes nominations (and wins) than every other actor ever. Many her victories were well-deserved, but some of her noms are actually downright ridiculous. “Death Becomes Her,” “Mamma Mia!,” “The River Wild,” really?! But the most egregious of them all was her nominated performance as poodle-loving Mary Fisher in “She-Devil,” a 1989 “comedy” which will forever mar her stellar resume… and the HFPA’s reputation.

3. Robin Williams, “Patch Adams”

Golden Globe nominationsThough this 1998 cheese fest grossed a whopping $135 million on the U.S. ticket office, critics slammed the flick due to the painfully predictable script, together with star Robin Williams for his equally predictable and unfunny performance. Yet, the picture and lead were nominated for Golden Globes, solidifying the HFPA’s questionable track record. Adding fuel on the fire was the real-life Patch Adams, who made a cameo in the film but later stated he “hated” the movie and Williams’ portrayal of him.

4. Sharon Stone, “Basic Instinct”

Golden Globe nominationsDon’t get us wrong; “Basic Instinct” is fabulous… fabulously inane, and then we cherish it and Sharon Stone’s star-making performance as two of our guiltiest film pleasures. However, nothing concerning this erotic thriller (minus its truly fantastic score) justifies a Golden Globe nomination. The HFPA simply loves a newbie, plus they were about to visit to not even attempt to find the flick’s headline-making, crotch-flashing, icepick-wielding villainess on it year’s red carpet.

5. John Travolta, “Hairspray”

Golden Globe nominationsIn no way will be the 2007 version of “Hairspray” a hot mess. Actually, there we were fine using its Golden Globe nomination for the best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. We weren’t, however, thrilled to see John Travolta on the Best Supporting Actor list that year. His fellow nominees were Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men”), Casey Affleck (“The Assassination of Jesse James”), Philip Seymour Hoffman (“Charlie Wilson’s War”), and Tom Wilkinson (“Michael Clayton”). The clear outlier: Travolta, who delivered an embarrassingly bad performance as Edna Turnblad, a role perfectly executed nowadays-deceased drag queen Divine from the superior 1988 John Waters version.
